Over four decades after Dušan Mandić began keeping a diary in his role as documentarian and bibliographer for the IRWIN group, Slikarjev dnevnik ('The Painter’s Diary') is being published in book form. In line with IRWIN’s artistic epistemology, what you are holding in your hands is a repetition of the Diary, which should be read as a document of the period in which it was created and, at the same time, in connection with (self-)historicization, used as a form of artistic and political work by alternative groups in the 1980s. The Diary offers a unique insight into the creative process and artistic epistemology of the IRWIN group, while also revealing fragments of the young artist’s personal world and how it was intertwined with local and global events during a decade of dramatic socio-political change.
