The 13th volume of the Collected Works of Edvard Kocbek (1904–1981) presents the writer’s previously unpublished diary from 1933, thus continuing a genre that Kocbek nurtured from 1932 practically to the end of his life. In 1933, Kocbek filled the diary with his emotions and thoughts from the time when he worked as a French teacher at the grammar school in Bjelovar, and then in Varaždin from the autumn onwards. Given that he did not intend to ever publish the diary, he wrote with particular openness and, without establishing the slightest distance, recorded reflections on his most personal and intimate experiences. Also in 1933, Kocbek had a lively interest in news events in Slovenia and the world, alongside which he analysed various social phenomena and from them determined spiritual tendencies and dividing lines. Judging from this diary, Kocbek the intellectual, whom we know from the end of 1930s and later, actually formed much earlier. Particularly towards the end, the 1933 diary already reveals an X-ray image of the author’s later spiritual physiognomy.
