The study ('Historical Anthroponymy and Toponymy of the Eastern Tolmin region') examines 194 current and eighty-eight former surnames in the eastern Tolmin region as well as the names of forty-five settlements in the region and eighty-two appertaining hamlets. The study area is limited to the eastern Tolmin region and part of the Cerkno region, encompassing the Bača Valley together with Ljubinj, Bukovo together with Zakojca, the Saint Vitus Plateau (Sln. Šentviška planota) together with Police, Dolenja Trebuša and Gorenja Trebuša, Slap ob Idrijci, and Idrija pri Bači. The part of the study addressing anthroponyms investigates when and how surnames arose in the area examined, how they changed over the centuries due to phonetic developments, and how new variants were created as a result of these changes and standardization. Just under two-thirds of the indigenous surnames still present today were already attested in sources from 1515 to 1523, and with rare exceptions the remaining third all appeared by the end of the sixteenth century.

The great majority of settlement names examined arose through transonymization from microtoponyms (nineteen), oronyms (twelve), hydronyms (seven), demonyms (one), and choronyms (two). From the perspective of semantic motivation, the settlement names examined arose from geographical concepts (twenty-six), phytonyms (five), and human presence (twelve). Of the seventy-five hamlet names, a full fifty-four arose from geographical concepts, phytonyms, and zoonyms, thirteen are connected with human activities, and eight are derived from personal names, among which at least six are pre-Christian.
