The second book of Zbrano delo Janeza Ciglerja includes the author’s newspaper articles and spiritual literature. Cigler’s most prolific collaboration with newspapers was with Novice, where, with only brief interruptions, he published from the very first year in 1843 until 1862; he contributed just one piece to almanach Drobtinice. The commentary also discusses Cigler’s German-language articles published in Illyrisches Blatt and Carinthia.
Cigler began publishing spiritual literature in 1828, when he served as a prison chaplain in the jail at Ljubljana Castle. He continued to publish several more spiritual works during his first years in Višnja Gora. Initially he published eschatological literature: Molitve za bolnike, 1828; Štiri poslednje reči, 1831; Dober nauk, 1832. He then released two prayer books: Mašne bukvice, 1832; Duhovni studenc, 1835, which were reprinted in remarkably large editions. Kratki nauki appeared in 1835. Within the scope of his spiritual literature, the commentary presents Cigler’s translations of missionary texts connected to the work of Friderik Baraga (1833, 1837) and raises the question of whether Cigler oversaw the publication of Mihaela Hofman’s Eksercicije.
