The creation of provinces was one of the most important and lasting political processes of the late Middle Ages in the territory of the Holy Roman Empire. The book describes the formation of the central Slovenian historical province of Carniola in the 12th–13th century, one of the major themes of early Slovenian history. The seemingly well-studied and long-familiar theme was undertaken by the young, and sadly deceased, author Andrej Komac. In doing so, he had to tackle the established and firmly rooted theses set by some eminent older Slovenian historians of the last century. The author’s erudition, expertise in such problems within the wider Central European area and his critical approach towards the outdated views resulted in a new, fresh presentation of this important chapter of the history of the Slovenes.
