Gasilski terminološki slovar ('The Terminological Dictionary of Firefighting') is the first scientific dictionary in Slovenian to cover the field of firefighting. The rich tradition of firefighting is also reflected in the maintenance of specialized literature, but the constant professional development and the transfer of knowledge from foreign language require standardization also in the terminology. The dictionary was compiled as a development and research task of the Administration of the Republic of Slovenia for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief in cooperation with the ZRC SAZU Fran Ramovš Institute for Slovenian Language and the Firefighting Association of Slovenia. The dictionary presents the field of fire protection and related activities, focusing on the protection of people, the environment and property — core values of every society. The terms are explained with terminological definitions that represent the conceptual system of Slovenian firefighting, which also includes terms from the fields of civil engineering, chemistry, mechanics and other scientific disciplines that are important for understanding and improving firefighting. Through the use of cross-references, the dictionary also provides assistance in the use of terms and should thus contribute to the standardization of terminology. The dictionary contains 2,256 entries, including 2,184 English and 2,275 German equivalents. The publication of the terminological dictionary of firefighting also achieves a broader goal: to raise awareness and strengthen the importance of firefighting in social consciousness and in science.
