This volume ('Depicted Traces of National Identity. The Collection of Drawings by Students of Professor Oton Grebenc at the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum') takes an interdisciplinary approach based on findings in sociology, nationalism, museology, ethnology, visual studies, and Slovenian history. It focuses on drawings made by students of Oton Grebenc, a schoolteacher and collector. The collection was assembled in the 1920s and 1930s and is kept at the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum. The author uses an original analytical approach to support her premise that the collection is a clear example of ethnic style or visualized ethnic identity, expressed in depictions of semantically symbolic, ethno-mythologized, and stereotyped components of everyday rural life.

An interdisciplinary-based study like this is an important supplement to the findings of all disciplines that serve to shed light on this issue: to sociology and historiography, which for some time have exceeded their disciplinary field boundaries, whereby ethnolo­gy also traced out its line of demarcation from them in the past, it primarily offers insight into social relations and the importance of the cultural facts that helped create Slovenian ethnic consciousness and strengthened the sense of ethnic belonging. In addition, the concrete issues could not have been studied without taking into account the relationships with concepts in art history and with contemporary analyses of the visual.
