Igor Sapač’s pocketbook on Cmurek Castle meticulously explores one of Slovenia’s oldest surviving medieval castles. Its strategic location on a rock above the river Mura, demarcating the border since 1919, makes the building a unique cultural monument in the broader area. Cmurek Castle was built as the centre of the estate around 1140 by Burkhard and his wife Judith, who also named themselves after it. The extensive complex’s high medieval architectural design and well-carved artistic elements are still recognisable today. The monumental cloister garth stands out among the early modern reconstructions of the castle as a Renaissance aristocratic residence of the Stubenberg family. The history of the castle, inextricably linked to its immediate surroundings for centuries, was characterised by a closed social care institution or “lunatic asylum” that operated there in the 20th century. Thanks to the individuals united in the heritage community of the Mozej norosti ('Museum of Madness'), Trate, since 2013, the castle is once again a recognisable centre of harmony in this border region.
